Posting from my new install of Win 7....damn this thing is fast!!!

Anyway I recently acquired a BFG8600 GT and a new 500GB drive so I thought I'd put the full 4GB of ram in my AMD X2 5600+ to the test. looks like it gonna do pretty good.

installed BF2 on it too...working good and fast so far.... :)

Indeed, Windows 7 is the dogs bollocks.
I assume you're running the x64 version to use the 4gb of RAM?

RC2 comes out 11th June too. The only thing I want them to fix really is the aero border padding. I put it at 0px to better simulate XP but when the window borders are black the left edge is layered full of ugly shading effects, white lines/highlights to make the bevel effect work, yet the right edge of the border is rendered differently and much neater.

I just wish you had the option of a nice neat window border without the white highlights and what not, the aero right now is not symmetrical by design, but dammit I want symmetrical!

hehe...yah the borders do look funky (for lack of a better term) The other thing I don't like (or don't understand) is the toolbars thing. I was used to having the Quicklaunch on the left side of the app bar. Prolly something I haven't figured out yet.

and yes...running the x64 version. It would be interesting to see how it does with even more RAM.

Apparently you can get Quicklaunch back.
As with almost any customization you can think of, it can still be done with Windows 7 if you look hard enough. If not right away, I expect the same tweaks that the community made with Vista will be out soon enough.

yah...on my XP install I use the quicklaunch for all my apps/utilities and the Links for all my games. I'd like to do that on Win 7. just gotta keep looking.

I skipped Vista so I'm kinda stuck in my ways with regard to changing OS'

I now have Deadspace and Crysis Warhead on the Win 7 install...they perform noticably better and Crysis LOOKS purdy in DX10 :)

You guys do know how the taskbar in 7 works though, right? You can pin an app to it and stick it wherever...when you launch it, its icon now serves as its taskbar entry. I love it, it's all the coolness of the quick launch bar without any wasted space :)

I agree the Superbar is amazing, but not necessarily an improvement in productivity. In the end it's still inherited the 'Vista effect' whereby the same tasks carried out in XP take 2 or 3 more mouse clicks in vista to achieve.

Specifically with internet explorers (in general) there has been small talk about overhauling the tab system (in Firefox particularly) as many people including me, still want a new window to be only one click away with our "tabs" where they should be, in the taskbar... and beneficially as separate processes to avoid the inevitable crash.

Adapting is easier said then done, but for an increasing amount of people forgetting old habits should not be necessary for every new version of Windows. Don't forget the vast majority still just want a new XP with better security and looks, but nothing to comprise performance or productivity. Less mouse clicks = optimization, in my book.

What do you mean the RC2 comes out June 11th? >_>

Anyways it is pretty damn awesome compared to Vista, and a great graphics update since XP. I've been using it at my main OS for a few months and have gotten used to not have the quicklaunch buttons anymore because they're pinned to the taskbar all the time.

And Xalias, as for IE, I know some people like it but I'd rather use a 3rd party browser because they usually get updated much more often for security holes. And they aren't also integrated into the OS (It seems its near impossible to actually unistall IE from Win7 without deleting system files, some of which are needed for other things).

Yeah, I immediately set the taskbar grouping back to its original functionality because having to click twice to get back to a window is just stupid.

Specifically with internet explorers (in general) there has been small talk about overhauling the tab system (in Firefox particularly) as many people including me, still want a new window to be only one click away with our "tabs" where they should be, in the taskbar... and beneficially as separate processes to avoid the inevitable crash.

That completely defeats the purpose of having tabs in the first place. In Firefox, go to Options - Tabs - New pages should be opened in... and select "a window." Voila, you are now tabless.

I don't know about you, but Firefox crashes hardly faze me when they do (rarely) happen...Firefox tells you "oops", you say OK, it starts back up in 2 seconds with all your tabs and anything you were working on right back where it was.

Yep, the crashes are mainly due to things like...
flash, java, javascript, quicktime, basically the big plugins that crash all browsers :).
and the too many tabs open ordeal.

I chose that open in new window option from day one. Tabs aren't completely disabled though, which I don't mind since tabs work well when you want to open a link for later, but stay on the same page. Can't help but feel I'm cheating firefox though when I use the google chrome interface I like so much and I need to figure out how the compatibility with ccleaner and cookies works with firefox still.

ok so I got 2 questions , one is more connected to vista but ...
1. Is it only me or does vista eat like 22gb on my system partition ?
2. And if it is so ... is 7 using less system partition space ?
